It is true that Democrats tended to be concerned about nuclear power, but as more information has come in and the need to end fossil fuel addiction has become more and more urgent, Democrats have increasingly seen nuclear power as a relatively benign alternative to fossil fuels.

There also remain some legitimate concerns about:

• the long-term effects of storing spent nuclear fuel
• safety regarding active nuclear fuel, especially with regard to the construction of nuclear weapons
• the general safety of operating nuclear plants, given that there have now been two major and yet preventable nuclear disasters:
  • Fukushima
  • Chernobyl
