subject: Can we agree on one thing?

That thing is: Political positions should be aimed towards making a better world, based on evidence and reason about what works towards those ends.

In other words:

  • If you're going to advocate a political position in a discussion group, you should expect that other people who disagree with it will want to understand why you believe it.
  • If you can't explain why you believe it, and others show how it is actually harmful, then you should reconsider it rather than continuing to advocate it.
  • If you continue to advocate it in spite of knowing the harm it does, then you should not be surprised or hurt when others ridicule it -- because you're continuing to support a harmful thing for bad reasons, which is worthy of ridicule.

Does anyone disagree with this basic idea?
