subject: SciHub, science "piracy", copyright, paywalls, and the profit motive

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4SMQdExHq0

This video covers the basics on the ethical issues around the science-publishing industry and paywalls.

It's bad enough when ginormous copyright-holders like Disney and Sony claim that every single unlicensed download represents a loss to them of the full retail price (some discussion here: https://tilde.zone/@tomasino/107572209147454125), but at least they *pay* the people who create those works. Science publishing companies like Elsevier not only *don't* pay, they *charge for the privilege of working for them*.

(Memo to @Nextdoor: "@" is a legal URL character, guys! The way your UI force-substitutes a user-link breaks the URL, and there doesn't seem to be any way to dismiss the pop-up. I had to type this up elsewhere in order to finish it.)
