About

TERFism is an ideology that demonizes transgender people (especially women) by offering a number of specious arguments which are easily refuted with a little knowledge but which may sound credible in the absence of that knowledge.

"TERF" is an acronym which stands for "Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminism", which is somewhat misleading in that TERFs mask their deep anti-feminism with a surface position of being "pro-woman" – as in needing to protect the poor dears, but punching down against marginalized people who aren't actually a threat (trans women) while ignoring the actual problems women face (e.g. the risks of speaking out against someone with power, the tendency for women's accounts to be taken less seriously than those of their male abusers, etc.).

TERFs often self-identify as "gender critical", which is a misnomer since they are both advocating gender essentialism and demanding compliance with gender norms.

Usage

The acronym is more frequently used to refer to practitioners of this ideology, i.e. "Trans-Exclusionary Reactionary Feminist". Some less common but more accurate acronyms include TWERP ("Trans-Women-Excluding Reactionary Pseudofeminist") and FART ("Feminism-Appropriating Reactionary Transphobe")[1].
