About
A proponentsist is someone who continues to advocate for a mistaken position by retreating into a more defensible version of said position without really acknowledging their mistake, a form of moving the goalposts.
It is a reference to the phrase cdesign proponentsists, a typographic error which appeared in hastily-revised creationism texts when a US court in 2005 ruled creationism to be a religious position not based on scientific evidence, and proponents of that position hastily retreated into the more sciency-sounding term "intelligent design".
