About

Nextdoor is a proprietary "hyperlocal" social network with an unusually strict but also vague set of rules regarding what speech is permitted. They will often suspend users for infractions of these rules, even when said infractions would be tolerated or even encouraged on any other social network -- from the very safest of spaces to the largest and most corporate/right-wing of commercial social networks such as Facebook or Twitter.

This combination of vagueness and strictness is often abused by bullies and trolls to suppress speech they don't like.

The following codes may be used to reference comment-material which could result in suspension if actually spelled out:

  • ND/0010 cursing, especially in the presence of RHs[1]
  • ND/0020 discussing moderation outside of specific groups approved for this purpose.
    • ND/0021 mentioning having been suspended, or someone else's suspension, actual or hypothetical
    • ND/0022 mentioning/discussing/reposting content reports
    • ND/0023 mentioning auto-post-prevention measures ("ND won't let me post this without redacting [word]")
  • ND/0030 criticism (regardless of how articulately the criticism is defended), often reported as "uncivil, unneighborly, or offensive":
    • ND/0031 criticizing an individual for holding a particular belief (this will often be described or reported as a "personal attack".)
    • ND/0032 ridiculing or insulting political positions, policies, proposals, politicians, or pundits. This may include derogatory nicknames, which may be described as "name-calling".
    • ND/0033 criticizing a group to which an RH[1] belongs
    • ND/0034 criticizing an unnamed group by characteristic (e.g. "some people [criticism of those people]..."). The reporter in these cases clearly identifies with the villain.
    • ND/0035 criticizing an individual for employing a logical fallacy or rhetorical deception
  • ND/0040 promoting a group disliked by RHs[1]
  • ND/0050 presentation of unwanted evidence
    • ND/0051 quoting a RHs own words back at them, to show inconsistency (this may be referred to as "taking out of context" or "a personal attack")

Usage

We have yet to determine whether ND would consider linking to these topics to be equivalent to actually discussing them, so it's probably safest to reference them more vaguely, as in CWRE ND 0001 or just ND0001 if you don't want to give the ND moderator too much of a clue regarding where to find them.

Footnote

  1. 1.0 1.1 1.2 reportophilic hostiles, i.e. people who are quick to file reports for anything they don't like, and what they don't like is everything you talk about

Notes

I think I need some classifications...

  • things that ND might actually suspend you for
  • things that conservoids may report but that are not actually violations
  • things that conservoids do which are deeply problematic but not ND violations
  • things that conservoids do which are arguably ND violations but they get away with it a lot anyhow
