I do not agree with a universal basic income. It will just disincentivize people from working.

And there are jobs. Maybe not wonderful jobs...but if you are willing to work and get the training, there are decent jobs. If you choose to sit around and make bad choices then you should not have any guarantee of an income.

In my life right now is a friends 21 year old daughter who quit every job she ever got within a week because the work was ‘too hard’ (standard retail work at Fred Meyer and the like). She quit high school because it was ‘boring’ and when her parents let her stay in their home for a year for free on the promise she would work on her GED, she did nothing but smoke weed and watch TV. At the end of the year, she’d had only one false start on the GED during which she did about 5 hours of work before she quit. She then sat around her parents house watching tv and doing nothing until her parents made her move out.

At the end of that first year, she got pregnant. She then proceeded to have 3 babies by 3 different guys in 3.5 years, getting more welfare with each child. And at age 21, she sits around on welfare, and spending her children’s Alaska permanent funds on herself as well. All of it on purpose. And because of only one reason: she is lazy as FUCK.

Sorry, but I cannot support that lifestyle. She had every opportunity. Her parents would have helped her pay for college if she had wanted that. But she is lazy as fuck and just wants to sit around for the rest of her life and smoke weed and watch tv. And I have zero interest in giving her one DIME more than she already gets.

What that girl needed was motivation to make better choices. Making bad choices should not make for a comfortable life.

I would support a raise in the minimum wage. Especially for people over 21. But adding 1,000 per month per person to welfare would make welfare recipients make more money than a lot of working people. And that is wrong.

People need to be incentivized to make better life choices, get job training, and work.

They do not need to be incentivized to sit around and do nothing on the government dime, pushing out more babies to get more money....and teaching those children to sit around themselves with their hands out.

In Alaska we have a substantial portion of the population that does nothing. Between welfare, the Alaska permanent fund, and dividends from native corporations, we have a large part of the native population that basically sits around and drinks themselves into oblivion, many of whom end up street people with money, staggering around stone cold drunk all the time. They could go to college. The native corps offer scholarships to anyone who wants to go. But to many kids, sitting around and playing video games with friends sounds like more fun than going to college and studying. And so before they know it they are 30 year old alcoholics with no skills....but with a steady (if relatively small) income. And so they sit around and drink themselves to death.

It’s not good. There needs to be a better plan than handouts. We need to teach a man to fish. Not hand them a fish every month. Not only because of the public funding issue, but to foster self respect, motivation and a positive outlook.

People need stuff to DO. Free money does not solve the underlying problem. People need a trade and/or an education. They need to work and take pride in themselves. A life on the public dole does not create a life with goals and ambitions and with hopes of bettering oneself.
