One way that wingnut groups can inspire popular support is to create the perception that your opposition has been engaged in scandalous behavior. The Republicans used this technique successfully against Bill Clinton on a number of occasions, but it really came into its own with their attacks on the Obama administration.

It should be noted that the Republicans rarely if ever attack Obama on any of the several points where he is actually culpable for violations of his duty; one can only presume that this is because they support his actions in those areas, and are not just attacking him but are also providing supporting cover for those questionable actions they do support.

These include:

  • increased surveillance of private citizens
  • increased government secrecy
  • human rights abuses
